A jacket is a hip or waist length garment used for the upper body. Typically jackets have sleeves, and fastens whether buttons or a zipper in the front. A jacket is generally lighter, tighter-fitting, and less insulating than a coat, which is outerwear. Some jackets are fashionable, while others serve as protective clothing. The flight jacket, or bomber jacket is a garment originally created for pilots, a garment that could keep pilots sufficiently warm, which eventually became part of popular culture and apparel.
